Three Generations of De Pere Concrete
Epoxy flooring in De Pere means working with slabs from very different decades. The city grew from 508 people in 1860 to 25,410 in 2020. The fastest jumps came recently: 24.1% from 1990 to 2000 and 15.8% from 2000 to 2010. So a single street can mix a mid-century ranch, a 1990s two-story and a newer build. Each one needs its own prep plan before a coating goes down.
Wartime houses and ranch-era garages
In 2021, two De Pere neighborhoods were added to the National Register: the Mansion Street WWII Defense Housing district and the Daviswood Ranch Homes district. These are reminders of how much of the city was built in the 1940s and 1950s. Garages from that period are often narrow, single-stall or added later. Their slabs can have:
- Wide shrinkage cracks and settled sections near the apron
- Old oil soaked deep into the concrete
- Several coats of porch paint or store-kit epoxy
We grind all of it down to sound concrete, clean out oil where we can, and fill the cracks. A coating only lasts as long as the surface under it.
The 1990s and 2000s boom
The homes added during De Pere's two biggest growth decades mostly have attached two- and three-car garages. Those slabs are usually in better shape, but they come with a different issue. Builders often finish garage concrete smooth and hard, and sometimes add a cure-and-seal product. A coating will not bond well to that surface until it is diamond ground open. We never skip grinding on a newer floor just because it looks clean.
What owners here tend to choose
Census QuickFacts puts De Pere's owner-occupied rate at 65.4% for 2020 to 2024, with a median owner-occupied home value of $280,600. Most of our De Pere conversations are with homeowners planning to stay. That changes the ask:
- Garages: flake epoxy with a polyaspartic topcoat, chosen to match the house and handle winter brine
- Finished basements: metallic epoxy for a poured, glossy look in a rec room or bar area
- Unfinished basements: a solid or flake coating over a slab that has passed a moisture test
- Workshops: a heavier epoxy build for tools, carts and fluids
A river city split in two
The Fox River divided De Pere for decades. The east and west sides were separate until West De Pere was consolidated into the city in 1890. Today St. Norbert College sits on the west bank near the Claude Allouez Bridge, and the De Pere Lock and Dam marks a key point on the Lower Fox. We work on both sides of the river. Homes close to the water can have higher groundwater, so riverside basements get a moisture test before we recommend anything.
Winter on the Green Bay commute
Most De Pere drivers spend the winter on salted roads into Green Bay and back. That brine dries into a white film on a bare floor and keeps working into the surface each time it gets wet again. A sealed topcoat keeps it on top. A squeegee and a floor drain or the open door do the rest. If your garage has no drain, we can talk about a slight texture that keeps slush from spreading across the whole floor.
How we price it
We measure the floor, look at every crack and stain, and check moisture where it matters. Then you get a written quote that lists the prep, each coat and the total. Call (920) 587-7291 to book a free estimate.

De Pere Questions
My 1990s garage floor looks fine. Why does it need grinding?
Smooth, hard-troweled concrete and old sealers keep a coating from biting in. Grinding opens the surface so the base coat bonds mechanically. Skipping that step is a common reason coatings peel in the tire tracks.
Can you coat a narrow single-stall garage in an older De Pere neighborhood?
Yes. Small garages are often quick jobs once old paint is removed and cracks are filled. If the slab has sunk or broken near the apron, we point that out and price repair separately.
Is metallic epoxy a good fit for a finished basement?
It can be, as long as the slab passes a moisture test. Metallic floors are poured and worked by hand, so each one looks a little different. We show you samples and talk through colors at the estimate.
