A Rural Town in Transition
Clayton is changing, and that shows up in the epoxy flooring jobs we see there. The town grew from 2,974 residents in 2000 to 4,329 in 2020, a rise of about 46%. It still covers about 36.4 square miles at only 119 people per square mile, so new homes go up next to old farmsteads. One week we might quote a brand-new basement. The next it is a 40-year-old machine shed.
Growth and services
Recent history explains part of that growth. After Fox Crossing annexed parts of the town, Clayton reached a water deal with the City of Appleton in 2018. In 2020 it signed a new agreement with Fox Crossing, paying $11.5 million for sewer and water services. That deal also barred Fox Crossing from annexing any part of the town for ten years. Town leaders had also begun efforts in 2018 to incorporate the eastern part of the town as a village. Where water and sewer reach, new houses tend to follow.
New-home basements
Many newer Clayton homes have full basements. Owners often want to finish them right away as a family room, a gym or storage. Before we coat a newer basement floor, we look at: 1. Moisture. New slabs keep releasing water for months. We test before we schedule. 2. Surface. Smooth troweled concrete must be ground for a good bond. 3. Cracks. Early shrinkage cracks are filled so they do not show. 4. Use. A gym needs a tougher topcoat; a rec room may suit a metallic finish.
If the readings are too high for a standard system, we will say so and talk through the options.
Older farmsteads and outbuildings
Clayton's unincorporated communities of Larsen, Medina Junction and Mikesville have long histories, and the town hall sits in Larsen. Older properties often have detached garages, shops or machine sheds on slabs that are worn, stained and cracked. Our shop and warehouse floor epoxy uses a thicker build and a textured topcoat for these buildings. We grind off old stains and fill damage before coating.
An aviation footnote
Larsen is also home to Larson Brothers Airport, where four brothers cleared a sod landing strip behind the family barn in the early 1920s. The airfield was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 and operated until 1990. A reminder that Clayton's outbuildings have hosted all kinds of work over the years.
Rural water and your floor
If your Clayton home is on a private well, nothing changes about how we coat the floor. Water softener, pressure tank and water heater spots in a basement are common sources of stains and moisture marks. We look closely at those corners during the estimate. Old rust rings and mineral stains get ground out. Any spot that is still damp gets tested before we decide what goes down there. A coated basement floor makes small leaks easy to spot early, because water sits on top instead of soaking into the concrete and spreading.

Clayton Questions
Can you coat the basement in a new Clayton home right after we move in?
Only once the slab is dry enough. We test moisture at the estimate. If it needs more time, we tell you when to call us back, or we look at a moisture-tolerant primer if the readings allow.
Do you coat machine sheds and older outbuildings?
Yes, as long as the floor is concrete. Older slabs get ground, cleaned of stains and repaired before a heavier shop-grade coating goes down.
Can you quote the house garage and an outbuilding together?
Yes. We measure each space and list them separately on one written quote, so you can do both at once or one at a time.
